Orion FAQs

How much does Orion Scoring System cost?

The Orion Scoring System is available in two products:

  • The Orion for Clubs is Scopos' most widely used application that manages matches, scans and scores paper targets, interfaces with electronic scoring targets, and generates results for teams and individuals. It is designed for use by clubs or teams for practice or competitions. Orion for Clubs is licensed annually. The first year license is $600, and each subsequent year license is $160 per year. Orion for Clubs is often bundled with a scanner and targets. The bundle price depends on the selected scanner but starts at $1230.
  • Orion at Home is similar to Orion for Clubs but intended for the home or individual user. It scans, scores, and generates results from paper targets. Orion at Home is free but a bundle is available with the Canon P-208 scanner and your choice of air rifle, or air pistol targets.
  • Result Center, Orion's online result service, is separately licensed. The Result Center is free for all customers who have a valid Orion for Clubs or Orion at Home license.

It is permitted to transfer the Orion license from one computer to a new computer, as may be required if a machine is being decommissioned or due to a hard drive failure.

Large organizations that manage large competitions may require multiple Orion licenses. In these instances, each license must be purchased separately. Site licenses are also available on request, please contact us for this.

What is the Difference Between Orion for Clubs and Orion at Home?

In short, Orion at Home is a limited version of the Orion software intended for individual use. Orion for Clubs is the full version of the softwware intended for schools, clubs, and organizations.

Orion at Home is free. Orion for Clubs is $600 for the first year license and $160 for each renewal year.

Both Orion for Clubs and Orion at Home support:

  • Creating matches with over 125 course of fire supported.
  • Linking athlete scores to their Scopos online profile.
  • Automated online results.
  • Scanning and scoring paper targets.
  • Participating in Virtual Matches.
  • And much more.

Orion at Home is limited in the following ways:

  • May only have 4 athletes in a match.
  • May not have teams in a match.
  • Does not include phone support.
  • May not create virtual matches (but may join them).
  • Does not include EST interfaces for Athena, MegaLink, or SIUS.

How fast is Orion?

On average, it takes Orion only about 27 seconds to scan, score, and post a single athlete's score online and in the mobile app.

The length of time it takes to score multiple targets depends on your scanner's speed and computer's processing power.
Example:

On an Intel Duel-Core 2.71GHz machine with 4GB RAM using a Canon DR-C230 scanner, Orion Scoring System will scan and score:

  • An air rifle 3x20 match (6 targets) in 39 seconds.
  • A smallbore 3x40 match (12 Targets) in 1 minute 7 seconds.
  • A 60-shot air pistol match (12 targets) in 57 seconds.

What kind of targets are required?

Orion targets have unique characteristics that make it possible to score electronically. First, they are made with higher grade target paper, allowing cleaner shot holes. Second, the are sized to feed through commodity scanners. Third, Orion targets have special markings on them that the Orion software uses to expedite the scoring process.

What EST Systems work with Orion?

Outside of the Athena Electronic Scoring Target (EST), Orion can receive shot data from the following EST Systems:

  • Sius via SiusData.
  • Megalink via MLRange.

Which Scanners work with Orion Scoring System?

Orion currently is available and supports four scanners:

  • Canon P-208ii is intended for home use or very small clubs.
  • Canon DR-C230 is best for small to medium size clubs.
  • Canon DR-C240 is best for small to medium size clubs.
  • Canon DR-M260 is best for medium to large size clubs.

While no longer available for retail sale, Orion continues to support the P-208, DR-C125, DR-C225, DR-3010C, DR-M260ii, DR-4010C and DR-6010C. Orion also has deprecated support for the Canon LiDE 700F.

Other flatbed scanners and some automatic document feeder scanners may also work; however, Orion is not supported with any scanner other than those listed on this page and will not be supported for troubleshooting by Shooter's Technology, LLC.

For customers who wish to try other scanners on their own, the basic scanner requirements are: it must scan in 24bit color, 300DPI, have a white or black reference color, save files in an uncompressed JPEG format, handle the heavier weighted 200gsm target paper, and are TWAIN compliant. The reference color is the color of the shot holes when scanned.

How do I Print Orion Scorecards From a Downloadable File?

Customers may purchase scorecard files as downloadable PDFs from Scopos' website. Using these PDFs customers may print the scorecards for their own use.

Purchasing Downloadable Scorecard PDFs

Visit Scopos' webstore. Look for the scorecards named with "Downloadable File."

Purchasing Orion Scorecards

With the notable exception of the BB Gun Test scorecard, Scopos will soon stop selling pre-printed scorecards. Going forward customers who wish to use scorecards in their matches must print their own.

Printing Requirements

  • Heavyweight cover stock must be used, between 40-55lb weight is required for printing scanable scorecards. Lighter weight paper may cause compatibility issues with Orion, and heavier is going to be outside of the specifications for Canon scanners compatible with Orion.
  • Professional print services are recommended over printing from a home printer.
  • The BB Gun Test and Shotgun scorecards must be printed on Letter size paper (8.5 x 11in).
  • The Silhouette, High Power Rifle, and Rimfire Sporter scorecards must be printed either on Half Letter size paper (5.5 x 8.5in) or printed on Letter size paper and cut to Half Letter.
  • Edits to the down loadable PDFs are not allowed.
  • Almost all scorecards must be printed on two sides, there is a front and a back. The BB Gun test scorecard is the only exception, there is only a front side to this scorecard.

What type of computer is required to run Orion?

Orion runs on most machines running Microsoft Windows 10 and 11 operating systems.

Orion no longer supports Windows 8.1 or earlier versions of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. This is because Microsoft ended support for these operating systems.

Internet Access is required to download and install the software. Integrating matches with Orion's mobile app also requires Internet Access. High Speed connection for day-to-day use of Orion is recommended but not required.

Do I need to buy a new computer to use Orion Scoring System?

In most cases, the answer is no; however, although your existing computer may meet our minimum requirements listed above, there is a chance that your computer hardware may still be insufficient. This may cause undesirable performance issues when using the Orion Scoring System. Please refer to your computer manufacture's specifications regarding your machine's configuration.

If you do need to purchase a new computer to use the Orion Scoring System, we have found that many of our customers are able to simply walk in to a local big-box-store and purchase a laptop within the $400-$500 range. Generally, these machines should be capable of running up-to-date versions of Orion for about 3 years when the computer is used solely for Orion Scoring System.

Will Orion run on MacOS?

Orion only runs on Windows based computers. However, we do have customers who reported running Orion on a Virtual Machine (using products such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare). Shooter's Technology, LLC can not troubleshoot any issues or provide support to customers who do not run a Windows-Native environment.

What kind of printer do you recommend with Orion?

There is no specific printer requirement for Orion. We recommend a laser printer. A color laser printer is best, but a monochrome laser printer also works.

Ink-jet printers will work with Orion but not recommended. This is due to the speed and accuracy of ink-jet printers; they tend to bleed, making it harder for Orion to accurately scan barcodes.

Will Orion score Green pellets?

While Orion is intended to be used with flat headed lead pellets, Orion does have basic support to score rounded headed tin (green) pellets. Orion will be able to score round headed pellets with reasonable accuracy, provided that the shot hole is 2mm or greater in diameter. Gun and ammo combinations that can not produce these size shot holes may not be scorable with Orion.

Is there an Orion 4 Bull Air Pistol Target?

Scopos does not make a 4 bull air pistol target for Orion.

We recognize that many US clubs hang four air pistol targets at the same time. Some of whom would like a pre-printed 4 bull target for Orion similar to the NRA's B-40/4. One that is perforated so after it is shot, it may still be scanned using Orion.

The reason Scopos does not make a 4 bull air pistol target is simple, it would be prohibitively expensive. Manufacturing costs are simply too high to justify.

The work around is simple, just hang four single bull targets at once.
